Key ideas to have a minimalist house

Minimalism is becoming more and more fashionable. We find this style as a reference among the biggest current trends. That is why today we are going to explain how to introduce minimalism into your home or office.

What is minimalism?

Although it seems that minimalism has recently arrived in our homes, it is a style that is not as modern as it seems. It emerged in the United States in the 20s of the last century by the hand of Frank Lloyd Wright with a clear leitmotiv: less is more.

It is based on the idea that the fewer ornamental elements a room has, the greater a sense of peace and tranquility it will cause. Since the saturation of elements in a home overloaded with furniture and objects can lead to visual stress.

Minimalism gives importance to the space itself, and not so much to the objects. You do not have to decorate every corner or wall, but let the room itself shine and enjoy its spaciousness. That is why an example of a minimalist space are houses with open spaces that use furniture or glass to separate the rooms.

This movement is combined with a love for natural materials such as wood, stone, glass or ceramics. It is not just a decoration style, but a lifestyle based on simplicity.

Minimalism in houses: tricks to achieve it

Houses play an important role in our lives, it is where we spend most of our time and, now, on many occasions, it is also where we spend our workday.

We give you some tricks to decorate your home or office with a minimalist style:

reduce furniture

In the minimalist decoration, the furniture must be simple and functional, utility prevails over decoration, for this reason:

-They should not have many objects on top of them.

-They must be fair and necessary. Do not add furniture that you are not going to use almost ever or that only serve as decoration.

-Give priority to its functionality, choose those that adapt to different tasks or functions, so that you can cover different needs with the same piece of furniture.

-Bet on hidden storage: built-in cabinets or shelves with doors.

-Buy evolutionary furniture, especially in the rooms of the little ones, so they will serve them for many years. In other words, avoid furniture such as beds with funny shapes that you will not want to have in your room later or opt for height-adjustable tables that adjust throughout your growth.

Use light and neutral colors to give light.

Colors are the key to minimalist decoration and always go for neutrals and light colors that give light to the rooms, this gives a feeling of peace and tranquility and can improve your well-being. Bet on grey, white or beige.

It is interesting that walls, ceilings and furniture have the same color to create more harmony. There's the 60/30/10 rule as a guideline for adding one hue to 60% of things, another secondary hue for 30% and a final color for the remaining 10%, so you don't overload a room with too many colours.

To improve the luminosity of the room, large windows are also used. This is especially recommended in work environments where you can get up and rest your eyes from time to time looking into the distance.

Reduce unnecessary decoration

As we said, don't be afraid to leave an empty space, let the space take center stage. Fewer things will give you more peace of mind and allow you to move more freely. For example, having a work table full of objects can make it difficult for you to have a good posture during those hours, since they may interfere with your arms or hands. Choose only what is necessary, that is, what you are going to use daily.

A practical exercise is to look around you right now and analyze the objects you see, how many of them have you not used in months? As Marie Kondo says, if it doesn't make you happy, throw it away.
